HemCon completes acquisition of Alltracel Pharmaceuticals

HemCon Medical Technologies Inc. said Wednesday it has completed the acquisition of Dublin, Ireland-based Alltracel Pharmaceuticals in a cash-for-stock deal.
The purchase occurred through Castlerise Investments Ltd., a newly formed wholly owned subsidiary of HemCon. Alltracel will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of HemCon and maintain its headquarters in Dublin. Combined revenue is expected to exceed $100 million.
Alltracel licenses their proprietary technologies across a wide spectrum of industries in the wound care markets. In addition, Alltracel offers private-label oral care products licensed in Europe through the Butler and GUM brands. The acquisition expands distribution opportunities for HemCon's KytoStat Bandage and other products in Europe while also expanding Alltracel's oral care products and medical technologies in the United States.
"We look forward to combining our resources and continuing to innovate," said John W. Morgan, CEO of Portland-based HemCon, in a statement. "The acquisition further strengthens HemCon's ability to develop health care breakthroughs and life-saving technologies on a global scale."
HemCon develops and makes products that control bleeding and infection resulting from trauma or surgery.
The company's signature product is a bandage -- made from material extracted from shrimp shells called chitosan -- that bonds to severe wounds within minutes of being applied.

Czech company Synthesia celebrate Gelita shipment

First oxidized cellulose left Synthesia in final medical device packaging (06.06.2007)
We shipped the first completely packed delivery of oxidized cellulose to our customer! So far deliveries have left Synthesia not finally packed, but as raw material intended for further processing. Production of finally packed product is a major milestone in Synthesia´s history.
In the future only finally packed product will be leaving Synthesia´s gates. It is packed in a primary and secondary packaging, intended for use on operating rooms, labeled by trademark of our exclusive partner and worldwide distributor company called Gelita Medical. Oxidized Cellulose


Oxidized cellulose (Surgicel) is widely used for intraoperative hemostasis. When saturated with blood, Surgicel rapidly swells into a gelatinous mass. This property is particularly significant in a confined space containing neural tissue. Six cases of paraplegia following the use of oxidised cellulose in thoracic surgery have been reported.

There have been several reports of neurological complications associated with the use of oxidized cellulose. There are six case reports of cord compression by a mass of this substance, causing paraplegia following thoracotomy. In all these cases, oxidized cellulose was used to control bleeding at the posterior end of a right T5-T6 interspace incision, in the region of the costo-transverse junction. Migration of an expanded mass of Surgicel through the adjacent intervertebral foramen into the epidural space caused significant cord compression.
